The Vigneron Initiative and Quinta da Alameda in Expresso

Lisbon, 23 October 2025 – Quinta da Alameda was featured in the weekly newspaper Expresso in an article dedicated to the initiative “Vigneron: Our Grapes, Our Wines”. As the piece explains, “the French word vigneron identifies a producer who uses only their own grapes to make their wines, with no purchases from outside.” It goes on to note: “The Portuguese equivalent of vigneron is vitivinicultor-engarrafador, a rather complicated and almost unknown term.” This lack of awareness is precisely what the initiative aims to address.

Written in Portuguese by João Paulo Martins, the article stresses that, to use this designation, producers must be formally registered and subject to a control process described as “extremely strict”, in order to prevent “the usual clever tricks of someone who wants to use the name and then goes off to buy grapes here and there.”

Despite the challenges involved, this practice, so established in France, still has ground to gain within the national market. Producing exclusively with estate-grown grapes strengthens authenticity, ensures controlled origin and deepens the connection between terroir and wine. These are qualities increasingly valued by consumers.

Quinta da Alameda is part of a very select group of only ten Portuguese producers who uphold this principle and carry this exclusive designation. A commitment to the vineyard, respect for the land and a constant pursuit of character and quality define the daily work of our team. Over the coming months, new joint presentations will take place in several of the participating estates, with tastings open to the public.
